The app says Kumbha. Your mother says Meena. Neither of them is guessing, neither is going to back down, and nobody in the conversation can tell you why two methods that are both correct have produced two different answers. This is the naam rashi problem, and it has a resolution that almost nothing written in English bothers to mention.
Who this guide is for: anyone holding two rashis at once — a name-based one and a birth-chart one — who needs to know which governs a wedding date, which governs a horoscope, and which one to give the priest on Saturday.
The short version: both are real, they answer different questions, and there is an old rule dividing the work between them. The longer version is that most people have been reading the wrong horoscope for years without knowing it.
- Janma rashi (जन्म राशि) is where the Moon actually was. Naam rashi (नाम राशि) is an inference from the first sound of your name. One is measured; the other is reverse-engineered.
- They are supposed to match. The naming tradition exists precisely so the name carries the birth star's syllable. When they disagree, something in that chain broke.
- A verse divides the work. Marriage, samskaras, muhurta and gochar run on janma rashi. Work, business, disputes and daily affairs are where naam rashi is read.
- Your daily rashifal is gochar. Which means it should be read from your janma rashi — and most people read it from the only rashi they know, the one their name gave them.
- Two names was always the plan. The rashi naam and the everyday name were never meant to be the same word, which is why so many families quietly carry both.
Naam Rashi and Janma Rashi: What Each One Actually Is
Janma rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, measured against the fixed stars. A date, a clock time and a timezone are all it needs. Nothing about it is open to revision — it is a fact about the sky.
Naam rashi runs the other way. It takes the first sound of the name you go by and asks which sign that sound belongs to. No birth details are required at all, which is exactly why the method exists — for the very large number of families whose birth times were never written down.
|---|---|---|
| Comes from आधार | The Moon's position at birth | The first sound of your name |
| Needs आवश्यक | Date, clock time, timezone | Only the name |
| Type of claim | Measured — astronomical | Inferred — from naming convention |
| Can it change? | Never | Yes — change the name you use and it moves |
| Governs किसके लिए | Marriage, samskaras, muhurta, gochar | Work, business, disputes, daily affairs |
The name letter is not arbitrary, which is the part people miss. Each of the 27 nakshatras divides into four padas, every pada carries its own syllable, and a priest naming a newborn is supposed to pick a name beginning with the syllable belonging to the pada the Moon was sitting in. Look at any printed janam kundali and you will find the Avakahada Chakra (अवकहड़ा चक्र) — the small reference block listing naamakshar, rashi, nakshatra, gana and nadi together. The name letter is right there, next to the rashi it was drawn from.
So the two are not rival systems. They are the same system, read from opposite ends. If you want either one computed properly from a birth date and time, Nurturepedia's rashi and nakshatra finder does both, including the pada, which is the part the clock decides.
So Which One Is Correct?
Janma rashi, whenever you have a birth time. It is derived from the Moon's measured position, while naam rashi only recovers that position if the name was chosen from it in the first place. Drik Panchang puts it plainly on its Hindi page: वैदिक ज्योतिष में राशिफल चन्द्र राशि पर आधारित है — Vedic predictions run on the Moon's rashi.
That is not the same as saying the method is worthless, and this is where most English pages stop too early. It has a defined job, which the next section sets out. What it does not have is the authority to overrule a chart when the chart exists.
Why Your Two Rashis Disagree
Three reasons, and it is nearly always one of them.
The name was never drawn from the star. Plenty of families choose a name for its meaning, or after a grandparent, or because both parents could finally agree on something at two in the morning. A name chosen that way carries no information about the Moon, and running it through a rashi chart tells you about the spelling rather than the child.
There are two names, and you are using the second one. A single word was never expected to do both jobs. The rashi naam carries the prescribed syllable and appears at the ceremony; the vyavaharika naam goes on the school register. One account holds that Rama's birth name was Hiranyabh and that it was deliberately kept private — a birth name was something you protected, not something you introduced yourself with. So if your everyday name gives a different sign from your chart, you may simply be running the calculation on the wrong name. Our guide to Hindu baby names and nakshatra letters sets out how the two-name structure works.
The English spelling collapsed two different sounds. Sanskrit separates retroflex ड from dental द, and ट from त. Roman script writes both pairs as D and T. Those sounds live in different nakshatras and therefore different rashis, which is why every published letter chart lists the same letter under two signs without explaining itself. We work through all four collisions here. Families reading the chart in Devanagari never meet this problem; families reading it in English hit it constantly and have no way of knowing.
The Rule That Divides the Work
Here is the part that is missing from the English-language internet almost entirely. Practising jyotishis do not treat this as a tie to be broken. They treat it as a division of labour, and they cite a verse for it:
विद्यारम्भे विवाहे च सर्व संस्कार कर्मषु।
जन्म राशिः प्रधानत्वं, नाम राशि व चिन्तयेत्।।
In the beginning of study, in marriage, and in all the samskara rites — the janma rashi is primary; the naam rashi is the one otherwise considered.
Two independent practitioner sources quote it with the same split, and it produces a usable table rather than a philosophy.
| Use this rashi | For |
|---|---|
| Janma rashi जन्म राशि | Marriage and matching · all samskaras and mangal karya · muhurta · travel · planetary transits (gochar) · Sade Sati and dhaiya · your daily and yearly rashifal |
| Naam rashi नाम राशि | Employment and professional matters · business and commerce · legal disputes · local and everyday affairs |
Where this verse comes from, honestly. It circulates widely among practising astrologers and appears on independent Hindi sources in identical form. We could not trace it to a named classical text — not to Muhurta Chintamani, not to any Jyotisha work we could check. Treat it as what working jyotishis cite, which is what it demonstrably is, rather than as scripture with a verified address. The split it describes is corroborated; the citation is not.
The Rashifal You Have Been Reading Is Probably the Wrong One
Follow that table one step further and it produces an uncomfortable result. A daily or weekly rashifal is gochar — it describes planets moving through signs relative to your birth Moon. Gochar is read from janma rashi. Every Hindi source above agrees, and the standard instruction is explicit: treat the sign the Moon occupied at birth as the first house, then read the transits around it.
Now ask which rashi most people actually know. It is the one their name gives them, because that is the one you can work out in four seconds without a birth certificate. Newspapers, apps and television segments all invite you to read by a sign you were never asked to verify.
If your name was drawn from your nakshatra, the two match and nothing is lost. If it was not, the column you have been reading for fifteen years belongs to somebody else. That is worth ten minutes and a moonsign calculation to settle, whatever weight you personally give the forecast.
What To Actually Do About It
If you have a birth time: compute the janma rashi once, write it down, and use it for everything the first row of that table covers. It will not change again.
If you have no birth time: naam rashi is the accepted substitute and always has been. Much of North India works from the rashi letter by default. You are not doing anything irregular; you are doing what the tradition provides for.
If you are naming a baby right now: this is the one moment when you can make the two agree permanently. Take the pada syllable from the birth star and the question never arises again for that child. The syllable is a sound rather than a spelling, so a registrar writing Khyati instead of ख्याति changes nothing. There is a shortlist of Hindu baby names with meanings to work through once you know the letter.
If the family is arguing: the argument is usually not about astrology. Someone has the rashi from the kundali and someone has it from the name, and neither knows the other method exists. Showing them that both are correct for different purposes ends more of these than picking a winner does.
